Remedial and consolidation works to three National Monument Castles

Overview and Objectives: Cunningham Civil & Marine were engaged to carry out remedial and consolidation works to three National Monument Castles located around Galway City: Merlin Castle; Tirellan Castle and Menlough Castle. All works were undertaken in accordance with a Conservation Plan supervised by the National Monuments Service. Environmental compliance was monitored by National Parks & Wildlife Service.

The works included de-vegetation, demolition, carved stone repair, anchoring, lead work and lightening protection. Extensive lime mortar works included grouting, consolidation, reconstruction, lime washing and repointing. Access & security were major components of managing the works successfully. CCM designed and implemented contractor designed temporary and permanent works including fencing, hoarding, scaffold and propping.
